Call Your Homeowner's Insurance
After you have returned home after the storm, quickly look over your home to get an idea of the damage that was sustained. Once you have given your house the once over, call your homeowner's insurance to make a claim. The insurer will need you to give a description of the damage to the home and surrounding property.
Visit With the Adjuster
The next step in rebuilding is having an adjuster come look at the home. He or she will evaluate the damage to determine the exact cause, such as wind, water, or fire. This is when the importance of flood insurance comes into play, especially if the bulk of the damage was done by flood water. However, if you can prove that the damage was done by rain water, you will have a better chance of getting reimbursed through regular insurance processes.
Photograph the Damage
Once you have your claim and are ready to make your repairs, be sure to fully photograph all of the damage that was done to your home. Take pictures of holes in the roof, missing shingles or siding, the ceilings, and so on. Also, take photos of your personal property that was damaged, such as furniture or electronics. You will need this information as you go along throughout the claims process.
